Christ - mas / Christmas

Writer's picture: Miss TMiss T

We are, of course, weeks past Christmas, and that is my fault. I didn't organise or prioritise my workload, and this is what happens! However, I think it is too important not to do a Christmas blog.

Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. However, Christmas is a time for non-Christians too. Buying presents for family and friends; partying, overeating, holidaying, and going to church to sing or listen to carolers. On that last note, it puzzles me why non-Christians sing carols when they don't believe in Christ. My theory is that singing carols makes you feel joyful, and puts you in the commercial Christmas 'mood'. I would like to add that, I am also guilty of some of the above, too.

The Western Church celebrates on 25 December and the Eastern Church celebrates the birth on 6 January. This is known as the twelve days of Christmas, from December 25 to 6 January. As a child, we celebrated Christmas twice because my dad was Ukrainian.

There are discrepancies about the genealogy of Jesus. My thoughts:

  • It doesn't matter what day or month Jesus was born, all that matters is he was born. The genealogy of Jesus is noted in (Matthew 1:16).

  • I'm not sure how Jesus's genealogy works given that Joseph wasn't Jesus's 'real' father. Maybe it was because of the angel who spoke to Joseph telling him, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 1:20).

  • Joseph's genealogy shows he came from the house of David. So it may well have been for census purposes that Jesus came under the house of David. I say this because Jesus said to his disciples, "I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." (John 16:28).

  • As an aside Jesus also said, "...and do not call anyone on earth 'father' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven." (Matthew 23:9).

Whilst we celebrate in the comfort of our homes etc., I am reminded of the homeless, the sick, and people, who are stuck in unnecessary wars. If you do nothing else, please remember them in prayer.

My New Year's resolution is, to make sure I celebrate the true purpose and meaning of Christmas.

Until next time, God bless!
